Back in the day when this ImaSportsphile video library was being recorded from 1978 to 1991….for Bone Daddy tells me that in the Video Room at The Sports Place, Madison Square Garden at 302 E. 6th Street in Austin, Texas….the walls of the room where the videos were being recorded on Sony Betamax video recorders….that as the 2300 hours of video library continued to grow over the years….the walls were constructed with shelves to stand the cassettes upright once they were recorded and put into the library….whereby the time 1988 rolled around….the walls were full of thousands and thousands of video cassette tapes that were filled with vintage content.
As Bone Daddy puts it…..there were thousands of Sony Betamax cassette tapes….and a couple hundred of Kodak cassette tapes…..which cam into being as a result of not being able to find Sony Betamax cassettes to purchase in Austin. So, BD being the kind of guy that he is….did a survey of which brand of video cassette tape was still functioning properly some 25 years later….and he found that of the roughly 2100 Sony Betamax cassettes with recording….42 were not playable for whatever reason….tracking, sound but no video, video but no sound or wouldn’t feed well in the playback Sony Betamax machines….for a loss of 2% from the original library….whereas 53 of the 198 Kodak video cassette taps didn’t work…for a 27% loss of video from the original library…..and that translates into more awesome vintage content for us to offer our viewing public.
