This HBO Boxing PreFight Show telecast of the impending WBA Heavyweight Title Fight between Terrible Tim Witherspoon verses Tony TNT Tubbs starts out with Barry Tompkins narrating a indepth personal profile of Tony Tubbs….which is followed by a Larry Merchant analysis of the upcoming fight, as he provides commentary on Tim Witherspoon’s personal profile and relationship with promoter Don King….which was not good….as Witherspoon eventually filed law suits against the promoter….who settled out of court in 1993 for one million dollars.
Once again, the HBO Boxing crew of Barry Tompkins, Sugar Ray Leonard and Larry Merchant do a great job of analyzing the two fighters and what they bring to the bout. Coming into this fight with Tubbs, Witherspoon had a record of 24 wins and 2 losses….a split decision for the WBC Title with Larry Holmes in 1983…..and a majority decision to Pinklon Thomas in 1984 for the WBA Title. Tony Tubbs came into this title fight with a 21 – 0 record after taking the WBA Title from Greg Page in his previous fight.
