Race for the Pennant was a weekly sports show that focused on Major League Baseball….while being premiered on Home Box Office (HBO) in 1978. It was hosted by Len Berman, Tim McCarver, Barry Tompkins, Bob Gibson, Maury Wills, Frank Robinson, Earl Weaver and others. The series started on HBO in 1978 and ended in 1992.
Race for the Pennant was notorious for bringing vintage baseball footage to television during…..like the wonderful piece narrated by Barry Tompkins about the two different professional baseball leagues around the turn of the 20th century from 1895 to 1905…..as the National League was a totally separate league from the American League….as the two leagues competed against each other everywhere but the field…. for players, for fans, for home cities, etc.
Race for the Pennant would always have a segment where a panel of baseball experts and players would sit around in a “scull session” discussion about the game of baseball…..as this one seen herewith has HBO hosts sportscaster Barry Tompkins….ex-MLB player and sportscaster Tim McCarver…..ex- Hall of Fame player and manager Frank Robinson…..and ex-Baltimore Orioles manager Earl Weaver…..as this distinguished panel discussed the up coming world series classic matchup between the Manager Bob Lemon’s New York Yankees verses Manager Tommy Lasorda’s Los Angeles Dodgers…..which includes highlights and opinions of who might win the series that makes this MUST SEE TV for any baseball fan.

If you ever are able to post the 1981 season preview edition that would be absolutely awesome. I remember recording it on audio cassette as a child as it was so excellent.
