DOG COMMENTARY:
1984 marked the 34 meeting of an American college football rivalry between the Texas Longhorns and the Texas Tech Red Raiders…..a rivalry that began in 1928….which accellerated in its intensity in 1960 when the Red Raiders joined the Southwest Football Conference…as these two storied universities have played each year since then for The Chancellor’s Spurs….which is the trophy awarded to the winner of the game of a set of spurs exchanged between the chancellors of the University of Texas in Austin and Texas Tech University in Lubbock
This 1984 version of the rivalry for The Chancellor’s Spurs featured a Longhorn team led by Coach Fred Akers that finished the 1984 season at 8 – 4…..in which Texas once again was ranked No. 1 in the polls….but soon dropped after a tie with Oklahoma and 3 straight losses to end the season.
Although the Red Raiders of 1984 were not a success by their 4 – 7 record…..they were a very competitive team….who came to play in this battle for The Chancellor’s Spurs on November 3, 1984 in Lubbock, Texas….as the Red Raiders looked really good in taking a 10 – 0 lead into halftime of this SWC Game of the Week….making this a game well worth watching.
